Fez

Fez is one of the most famous Moroccan cities and is the third largest city in the country. It is one of the four imperial cities, the other three being: Marrakesh, Meknes, and Rabat. From the year 1170 to 1180, Fez was believed to be the largest city in the world and presently too, it is regarded by the Muslims as the holiest city after Mecca and Medina. Fez is also known for its World Sacred Music Festival which is organized here every year. Performers from around the globe participate in this festival and present the sacred musical traditions of their countries.

This city is divided in three districts which include Fez el-Bali or old Fez, this district is thronged by visitors as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This district is also popular as it is believed to be the largest car-free urban area in the world. The other two districts are Fès el-Jdid or New Fès, and the modern French built Ville Nouvelle. This city has everything for the visitors like the fascinating markets, historical monuments, and sumptuous food. They can also buy leather goods, ceramics and textiles and take them back as souvenirs. Leather from the tanneries of Fez is in much demand as it is still made in the way it was made in the Middle Ages. Visitors who are keen to visit these tanneries should visit them in early morning as the stench of leather sets in later hours. Fez also has several madrasas or religious schools and mosques and some mosques also allow Non-Muslim visitors to some parts of the mosque.
